The official language of the Bahamas is English. However, due to the country's proximity to the United States and its history of being a former British colony, there are also influences from American and British dialects. A creole language known as Bahamian English is also spoken by some locals, particularly in more rural areas. Spanish and Haitian Creole are also spoken by a small percentage of the population, especially immigrants and their descendants. Additionally, the tourism industry has brought a multicultural mix of languages, including French, German, Mandarin, and Portuguese among others.
